Building a Proxmox Node with Dell R730
The Dell PowerEdge R730 is one of the most popular choices for homelab enthusiasts. In this guide, we'll walk through setting up Proxmox VE on a refurbished R730.
Why the R730?
The R730 offers an excellent balance of:
- Performance: Dual Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 support
- Expandability: 24 DIMM slots, up to 1.5TB RAM
- Storage: Up to 16x 2.5" or 8x 3.5" drives

Prerequisites
Before we begin, make sure you have:
- A Dell R730 server with iDRAC configured
- A USB drive (8GB or larger)
- Network connectivity (DHCP or static IP ready)
- Proxmox VE ISO downloaded from proxmox.com
Step 1: Prepare the Installation Media
Download the latest Proxmox VE ISO and flash it to your USB drive:
# On Linux/macOS
sudo dd if=proxmox-ve_8.x.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress
Step 2: BIOS Configuration
Before installing, configure these BIOS settings:
- Set boot mode to UEFI
- Enable Virtualization Technology (VT-x)
- Enable VT-d for PCI passthrough
- Configure RAID or set drives to HBA mode if using ZFS
Step 3: Install Proxmox VE
- Boot from the USB drive
- Select Install Proxmox VE
- Accept the EULA
- Select your target drive
- Configure your timezone and keyboard
- Set a strong root password
- Configure network settings
- Complete the installation and reboot
Step 4: Initial Configuration
After installation, access the web interface at https://your-ip:8006
Update Package Repositories
